I’d been wanting to capture India’s street style scene for quite some time and was curious to see how things had changed since I was there for the ready-to-wear and couture shows in New Delhi almost five years ago. Judging from the pics both on and off the runway, the biggest surprise was the lack of celebrity presence via front row guests or “showstopper” to close out a show. The focus was firmly on the business of fashion and as it has happened in cities around the world from New York to Tokyo, street style was the new star.
What makes street style so appealing is that it gives us a glimpse of the cultural tenor and spirit of a city and is irreverent and fresh in a way that fashion editorials, with their right off the runway looks, are not. What I loved most was seeing the seamless blend of both Indian and “western” fashion and how much character and personality shone through in each look. Check out some of my favorite street styles from Amazon India Fashion Week below!
