Historically, the Golden Globes are where the stars take a fashion risk, have a bit of fun and generally bring it in a way that’s very different from every other awards show. And while we love a good fashion moment, the looks that won the night for us were the ones that we felt looked effortlessly elegant, understated and yes, even a bit demure. Thigh high slits, plunging necklines and sheer everything is so 2013. And on that note, here are our picks for the night’s best dressed. Let us know if you agree in the comments below!
Lupita Nyong’o in Ralph Lauren
Lupita’s look was hands down our favorite of the night. The gorgeous shade of red, the sleek silhouette and the minimal accessories underscored the idea that beauty is often in simplicity.
Naomi Watts in Tom Ford
There’s something to be said about choosing looks that suit your coloring and body type and Naomi Watts always gets it right.
Cate Blanchett in Armani Prive
There’s a reason why the ethereal actress is known as “Queen Cate” in the fashion world. Her dramatic roles on screen are equally matched by her choices on the red carpet and this spectacular tulle and lace gown was no exception.
Olivia Wilde in Gucci
This slinky, form fitting gown was the perfect way for Olivia to show off her baby bump while still looking glamorous.
Kate Beckinsale in Zuhair Murad
A gorgeous girl in a gorgeous gown – need we say more?
Margot Robbie in Gucci
Although this gown features the aforementioned thigh high slit, the dress showed just a hint of leg on the red carpet. The actress wisely kept the look pared down with soft makeup and minimal accessories making this one of our favorites of the night.
Kerry Washington in Balenciaga
Kerry’s custom Balenciaga gown was the epitome of pregnancy chic.
Reese Witherspoon in Calvin Klein
At first glance, it may not look like the most exciting dress on the red carpet but the color, cut and fit of this dress was perfection and we think Reese looked phenomenal in it.
Julianna Margulies in Andrew Gn
Again, our love for this dress comes back to the idea that a seemingly simple dress with minimal details can look incredibly elegant and chic.
Sandra Bullock in Prabal Gurung
It wasn’t the dress we loved as much as how good Sandra Bullock looked wearing it. For someone about to enter her fifth decade, she just keeps getting better and better.
