It’s unfortunate that in the fickle world of modeling, seeing women of color on the runway, in advertising campaigns and on magazine covers are few and far between. While that may slowly be changing, it was still quite a sight to see several models of South Asian descent walk in Chanel’s Pre-Fall ‘Paris-Bombay’ show. Their inclusion was due in large part to the show’s Indian theme but it was none the less a big step for Chanel and fantastic exposure for the models who are rising stars in their own right. Take a look below to see the models who walked in the show.
Lakshmi Menon: India’s first bona-fide international supermodel, Menon rose to prominence after becoming the face of luxury brand Hermes‘ Spring 2008 campaign. The casting for Chanel’s Pre-Fall show was so secretive that she didn’t realize that there were other Indian models in the show until she was backstage.
Ashika Pratt: New Zealand born Pratt is half-Fijian and half-Indian and has graced the cover of Vogue India twice. She was recently named as the new face of the United Colors of Benetton.
Jyothsna Chakravarthy: An established model in India and a regular on the pages of Vogue India, Chakravarthy scored the Chanel gig after model scouts saw a shoot she had done for an Indian fashion magazine. The Chanel show was the first time she had ever modeled outside of India.
Smita Lasardo: The Mumbai born model has previously walked the runway for Vivian Westwood in Paris and graced the covers of Elle and Marie Claire in India.
Liza Golden: The half-Indian, half-American beauty became a highly sought after model while working in India and won a coveted contract as the face of Lakmé cosmetics. She recently became the face of Armani Exchange in the US.
Alyssah Ali: The Trinidadian born model who has Indian and Spanish roots is currently the face of Chanel’s Perfection Lumiere campaign. Ali was also featured in a cinematic commercial for Yves Saint Laurent’s La Nuit del L’Homme with French actor Vincent Cassel.
Shanina Shaik: Victoria Secret’s newest angel, Australian born Shaik made her debut on the Victoria’s Secret runway in November 2011. Her modeling career took off after she competed in the Australian version of Make Me a Supermodel. Although she didn’t win the competition she did score boyfriend, Tyson Beckford.
Kelly Gale: Born in Australia to an Indian mother and Australian father, the sixteen year old model had previously walked in Alaïa’s fall 2011 couture show.
