The start of fashion season is officially kicking off in New Delhi with Amazon India Fashion Week (AIFW) on Wednesday, March 16th. The show resumed its makeup partnership with Maybelline New York but moved to a new venue, the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, in the capital. Here’s what you can expect over the next five days:
Opening Ceremony: Designer Varun Bahl will open AIFW after a five year absence from the ready-to-wear shows. He is expected to present a diffusion collection featuring long jackets, jacquard printed dresses and separates that can be mixed and matched and layered to provide multi-seasonal wearability. The pieces will feature Bahl’s signature floral embroidery against streamlined silhouettes.
Theme: The overarching theme of AIFW is a focus on Indian textiles and indigenous crafts presented in a global context. Designer Anupama Dayal will feature a collection inspired by the tribes of Nagaland, Anita Dongre will showcase block prints from Rajasthan and Gujarat as well as kantha embroidery from artisans in Maharashtra, and Varun Bahl will present Indian textiles for the first time, specifically brocade, in his new collection.
The Lineup: Over 45 designers will be showing their collections on the runway, in addition to those who will be exhibiting their collections in stalls at the venue. Participating designers include industry veterans like Rajesh Pratap Singh, Shantanu & Nikhil, Anita Dongre, Gaurav Gupta, Namrata Joshipura, Rina Dhaka, etc., as well as smaller brands and labels. See the full schedule of designers here.
New Addition: For the first time at AIFW, three accessories designers will debut their collection on the runway. Ambar Pariddi Sahai will present a collection inspired by the sea featuring iridescent pearls, corals, and shells, Nitya Arora of the label Valliyan will showcase a modern take on the Mughal dynasty, and Vasundhara Mantri’s collection will reflect the spirit of the natural world and integrate elements like leaves, twigs, and natural rocks into wearable pieces of art. Also new, is a separate mens wear show where designers JJ Valaya, Ashish N Soni, Rohit Bal, among others will show their collections.
Grand Finale: The finale will feature curated collection from nine designers – Rajesh Pratap Singh, Rahul Mishra, Aneeth Arora, Abraham & Thakore, Anju Modi, Samant Chauhan, Rohit & Rahul, Amit Aggarwal, and Pankaj & Nidhi – exploring the theme of “India Modern” and the duality of Indian fashion: its rich history and heritage and reimagining those traditions within a contemporary context. The designers will each show 5-6 pieces in a palette of indigo, white and earth tones. To expand on the theme, Amazon.in will also have a dedicated “India Modern” store on its shopping site featuring over 2,000 products which highlight Indian textiles and craftsmanship.
