It’s no secret that I’m a huge fan of photographer Anushka Menon, who has the ability to turn every project into a work of art. One that I’ve greatly admired is the campaign she shot for Kundalini Arts, a UK based label from designers Philip Shadbolt and Mandala Bob, which features scarves, shawls, clothing and home furnishings inspired by traditional Indian and Asian motifs. The images are so beautiful and visually arresting that I reached out to Anushka to learn more about the making of the campaign. Here’s what she had to share:
“Philip and Mandala, who I’ve worked with before, are dear friends of mine. For this shoot, which was shot in Delhi, Gautam Kalra, the stylist, and myself had complete creative freedom to shoot this however we wanted. So, we took inspiration from the prints itself and developed a small styling brief by separating the prints into themes such as African, Indian and Japanese. You can see how we have incorporated the themes in each photo. Instead of shooting the scarfs as one would normally, we decided to showcase the prints more and so Gautam styled them to look like dresses/kaftans and we used them in the background as well. We were limited by the size of the background scarfs and therefore could only shoot mid length shots. A lot of people presumed the background was fake and later put in post production, but it’s not.”
“Surelee Joseph is the model who fit perfectly into the image with her gorgeous complexion which allowed for the prints to boldly pop against her skin. Anand Kaira, one of my favorite makeup artists, brought the looks to life with the subtle yet striking makeup.”
