Judi Dench’s Love Affair With Indian Fashion

The eminently talented Dame Judi Dench reprises her role as the widowed Evelyn Greenslade in The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, the sequel to the surprise 2012 hit, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which opens in theaters today. Although, it was the movie that brought the actress to India for the first time, Dench has been associated with the country for much longer due to her love of Indian fashion, specifically from designers Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla.

According to the duo, Dench came across their designs when actress Sophie Marceau wore some of their pieces in the Bond film, The World Is Not Enough (1999) in which she also starred. Dench loved the clothes and asked to be introduced to the designers and they’ve been working with her ever since.

For the world premiere of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in London, Dench wore a richly embroidered silk coat from the designers’ Rabadi collection which she wore over a pleated tunic and pants.

In the March 2015 issue of Vanity Fair, Dench wore a richly embroidered coat with gold lotus motifs over a shift dress which has become a favorite silhouette.

Dench seems to favor wearing Indian clothes on the red carpet and wore Abu Sandeep designs to both the world premiere of her film Philomena at the Venice Film Festival and its screening at the London Film Festival in 2013.

It’s wonderful to see an actress like Judi Dench, who could easily have a gown made by any designer in the world, represent Indian fashion so beautifully on the red carpet!
