When we first saw designer Manav Gangwani’s collection at Delhi Couture Week a few years ago, it was definitely not love at first sight. The collection was a bit too in your face with lots of crystals, sequins and “bling” for days.
But Gangwani showed us that he can also do subtle glamour with incredible skill when he designed model Kendra Spears’ bridal sari for her wedding to Prince Rahim Aga Khan last year. Spears was referred to the designer by model Naomi Campbell, one of his biggest supporters and who was recently spotted wearing his sari to a charity event in London.
Gangwani’s latest couture collection, shown in Delhi earlier this month, was a perfect balance between his more over the top sensibility and the refined elegance which has also become a part of his aesthetic. The collection, called ‘Seven,’ for the seven virtues, featured 60 pieces, ranging from kaftans and draped saris, to lehengas and anarkalis. In keeping with Gangwani’s signature style, the garments were richly embellished with Swarovski crystals, pearls, as well as gota and chikankari embroidery. Translating his seven virtues into seven colors, Gangwani used shades of pink to depict hope, yellow to depict faith, a gentle lavender to depict forgiveness, ivory to depict honesty, the brilliance of aqua to depict strength, gold to depict courage and finally green to depict loyalty.
