When it comes to presenting elegant red carpet fashion, there are few who do it better than Naeem Khan. This season, however, Khan decided to change things up a bit and expand his repertoire to include sportswear and jumpsuits to appeal to a customer base that is starting to skew much younger. In addition to mainstays like Michelle Obama, Connie Britton and Padma Lakshmi, Khan also counts Nina Dobrev, Nikki Reed, and Jenna Dewan-Tatum as fans.
Perhaps, it was in trying to appeal to a wider audience that made this collection feel disjointed and a bit all over the place. The seemingly varied design elements from sportswear, to geometric stripes, to floral, bedecked with crystals, sequins, lace, ruffles and bows made it feel like several different collections rather than one cohesive unit. While we are in full support of a designer trying something new – hello sequin sweatpants! – it would have been wonderful to have seen a greater exploration of one of the new elements that Khan introduced rather than show us literally everything he can do. The sequin and beaded red carpet looks were phenomenal as usual, but what felt really fresh were the floral gowns and sportswear elements of which we would loved to have seen more.
It will be interesting to see which stars gravitate to this collection. We would love to see the final piece from the show – a white, crystal beaded jumpsuit on someone like Rihanna, Iggy Azalea or Jennifer Lopez, who could do it justice. Take a look at the collection below and let us know what you think!
