Fashion Friday

Today concludes my series of “Fashion Friday” guest posts with Marigold Events. The final post features designer Tarun Tahiliani one of India’s most formidable fashion talents. A huge thank you to Neha Goyal for giving me the opportunity!

Lakme Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2011: Rina Dhaka

Rina Dhaka put the focus firmly on “festive” with her range of shimmery, sheer, and sparkly ensembles at Lakme Fashion Week. Dhaka’s muse was definitely a confident, modern Indian woman who isn’t afraid to show a little skin. The collection skewed more Western than Indian and had lots of pretty cocktail attire in cream, gold and pink.

Delhi Couture Week 2011: Manish Malhotra

It’s hard to find fault with much that designer Manish Malhotra does because his clothes are just so darn pretty. But as the maxim goes, pretty will only get you so far. While this collection is a vast improvement from the one he showed at last year’s couture show, Malhotra has more or less showed the same silhouette, style, look, since Autumn/Winter 2010. A notable exception was his Kashmiri influenced collection for WIFW A/W 2011 which was gorgeous–but again not a huge departure from looks he’s shown in seasons past. Malhotra clearly has the talent to create beautiful garments but it’s time to innovate. That’s what makes fashion interesting and exciting. And ultimately it’s what makes or breaks your business. No one is going to invest in the same silhouette season after season. It will be interesting to see where he goes from here.
