Prabal Gurung: Fall 2010 RTW Show
The buzz around designer Prabal Gurung has been extraordinary since he launched his eponymous line a year ago. After showing his collection at smaller venues for the last two seasons, Gurung staged his first runway show in the tents at Bryant Park to preview his Fall 2010 ready-to-wear collection. Among those sitting front and center at the show were Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of American Vogue, and fashion plate Zoe Saldana. Gurung’s rise has been meteoric since being anointed the “one to watch” and judging from the reviews of the show, his collection didn’t disappoint.

Alexander McQueen was one of fashion’s most brilliant talents, a true visionary who pushed the boundaries of fashion and art creating stunning collections of extraordinary design. McQueen’s genius as a designer was the sheer breadth of his creativity and the endless possibilities he explored with each collection.

Indian Fashion: Looking Back to Move Ahead
Fashion in India is unlike anywhere else in the world. Indigenous clothing is still the norm for the vast majority of the population and the sari, the traditional garment worn by women in India, has remained virtually unchanged for the last five thousand years. As the sartorial diversity of the nation reveals, clothing is much more than what you wear. It’s an intrinsic part of one’s identity denoting everything from place of origin to caste, religion, occupation and social status. This significance was most evident during India’s freedom struggle when in an act of defiance and nationalistic pride, Indians discarded mill produced fabric from Europe for locally made khadi or hand spun cotton. “This is sacred cloth” Gandhi said of khadi which became a potent visual symbol of India’s fight for independence.
